A smallish storefront in the heart of Boston, Colonial Trading is nevertheless a powerhouse of good customer service and fine coin selections.
Folks who are familiar with my Yelp! know that I am an amateur collector and that I've had a number of small wisdoms about "coin people" and coin dealers, notably that they're usually arrogant pricks and/or insane. Colonial emphatically does NOT fit into the mold: in my dealings with folks behind the counter (admittedly short, but revealing), I found them to be very nice and helpful. They didn't even seem to mind when we browsed and didn't buy anything.
Selection is good. They even had the $750k 1793 Chain Cent that my wife has been lusting over! I bought it for her...nothing's too good for my wifey! Oh, wait, no I didn't.

Now, not everyone still collects coins. But when my fiance' decided to pick up a hobby that didn't involve drums in the house, I was all for it. I walk by this place every day, and they have a wonderful display of vintage jewelry and the name alone makes you want to go in and see what you can find.
Cameo jewelry is hard to come by and so gorgeous! Pocket watches, rings, pewter you name it. But the main attraction are the hundreds, if not thousands of coins from not only different time era's, but different parts of the world! This is where I knew coin collecting would be fun for me too. It started off with finding the most interesting shapes, Jamaica, Bermuda, and I want to say an island off of Africa, Creone? Then I got into time periods, then mint. Still fascinated with around the world coins. Then I started bringing things in for appraisal!
The owners work the counter and they are so helpful! They take out books and tell me all about the coin I brought in. And they have the supplies to start an actual coin collection book. Sheets, cardboard pieces with plastic circles, writing pen, books to look up the coins. They also have a great gift idea for the coin enthusiast..a velvet jewelry box, that would look like it would hold an expensive watch, that has the 6 American denomination of coins of any year, in mint condition with papers. Relatively cheap, under $50 if I remember. And they happen to sell a lot of other Americana trades, and stamps as well.
I suggest going in just to look at the awesome horizontal rotating coin display case. Every time I've went, I have had consistent help and friendly staff.
Start collecting coins!!

I am not a coin collector, I mainly just stop in here occasionally to sell unwanted silver and costume jewelry. The folks here are always friendly and enthusiastic about whatever I bring in, even if they don't end up purchasing some items. Many places, although they advertise that they buy jewelry, act like you have the plague when you show up with stuff to sell. The folks at Colonial are always kind, however.
